Life in the modern world is a technological marvel. Electronic devices enrich our lives in innumerable ways, yet they also can present perplexing challenges as we raise our children. At ROBS, we are persistently attuned to this rapidly changing world, and we address it directly every day.
Here, children are taught to embrace technology as a powerful educational tool. Starting in Prekindergarten, students begin to use iPads for learning. By third grade, through our commitment to 1:1 computing, each student has access to the same computer every day. For grades 6-8, families purchase a designated laptop for use at school and home.
Creating multimedia presentations and using apps like Kahoot for friendly competition energize students about learning. From the early years of Lower School, we begin to teach the basics of programming and robotics. And students use 3D printers along with software such as SketchUp for digital design.
Every step of the way, we make “digital citizenship” a priority in our curriculum. While students are learning to use technology to enhance their education, we teach them to do so with honesty, responsibility, and character. We recognize that today, many children understand and utilize new media well ahead of their parents. That’s why we also work to educate parents on how to safeguard children from technology’s risks.
