Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” As we have done for the last nine years on the MLK holiday, the ROBS community answered with a resounding response.

Our ninth annual MLK All-School Day of Service brought students, parents, faculty, staff, and administrators together in loving service of others. Chair Caroline Cornett and Co-Chair Jessica Yi organized a combination of at-home, on campus and off-site projects, supporting Kids Meals, Star of Hope, First Responders, and more.

All-School Day of Service by the numbers:

·          270+ total volunteers! (150+ at ROBS, 65+ offsite, and 78 families at home) 

·          14 volunteers sorted books at Books Between Kids

·          340 pairs of shoes donated to Soles 4 Souls 

·          119 dolls rescued and refurbished 

·          480 lunches packed for Kids’ Meals  

·          1000+ bags decorated for Kids’ Meals  

·          720 Star of Hope Snack Bags assembled 

·          96 child toiletry kits made for BEAR 

·          60 binders made for the Adult Program at Star of Hope 

·          60 art kits created for Young Audiences 

·          450 child supply kits assembled for Houston Area Women's Center

·          2250 books donated and delivered to Books Between Kids

·          48 First Responder baskets delivered to local Fire/ Police Stations

For ROBS, serving the community is bigger than one day. Service learning is integrated into the curriculum with grade level service projects throughout the year. “Service isn’t about checking a box one time a year,” said Head of School Leanne Reynolds. Service learning requires students to learn about the issue their project seeks to address, participate in a hands-on activity to address it, and reflect on their experience in a structured way (e.g. through a drawing, essay, etc.). It’s giving students a deeper understanding of some of the world’s challenges and showing them how to help address those challenges. As Mrs. Reynolds shared, “All-School Day of Service is a beautiful example of the impact our kids can have when empowered with knowledge, character, and faith.”
