A Sixth-Grade Orchestra Elective at ROBS
In fifth and sixth grade at River Oaks Baptist School, students participate in a robust elective rotation designed to expose them to experiences beyond the traditional classroom. Here, students are encouraged to explore new interests, discover their passions, and develop the confidence to pursue them with purpose. For Patrick Guerini ’23, that journey began the first time he picked up a cello in Dr. Ruth’s sixth grade orchestra class.
“Dr. Ruth was very patient and encouraging, and she always kept it fun,” Patrick shared in an earlier ROBS feature. “That first successful year had a lasting impact on my middle school career.” He remembers being excited from the very start, but it was her steady encouragement, he says, that gave him the confidence to keep going.
From ROBS to HSPVA: An Award-Winning Young Cellist
That confidence carried him well beyond the ROBS halls. Today, Patrick is finishing his junior year at Kinder High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in the Instrumental Department, where he has distinguished himself as an accomplished young musician. In addition to performing with the HSPVA Orchestra, Patrick is also a member of the Early Music Ensemble and the Cadence Piano Quartet, which earned first place at the 2026 Oriens Chamber Music Competition in Houston.
Patrick was also named a winner of HSPVA’s 2025 Concerto Competition, earning the opportunity to perform Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations at the school’s spring concert. Outside of school, he has participated in the rigorous Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) audition process, and for the past two years, has been selected as a member of the TMEA All-State Orchestra - one of the highest honors a student musician in Texas can receive. This summer, Patrick continued to strengthen his musical abilities while studying at the prestigious Meadowmount School of Music in upstate New York alongside talented violinists, violists, and cellists from across the country.
Why the Arts Matter at ROBS
Stories like Patrick’s are a reflection of the lasting impact of a PS-8 education, where students are given opportunities to explore a wide range of interests during formative years of growth and development. While the ROBS Arts Department does help students develop technical skills, that's not our primary focus. Above all, we hope to inspire creativity and self-expression while fostering lifelong confidence and perseverance among our students. Our passionate, highly qualified educators guide this process. Patrick's experience with Dr. Ruth serves as a powerful reminder of the role educators play in helping students recognize their gifts and discover what they are capable of achieving.
A Journey That Began at ROBS
What began as a sixth grade elective at ROBS has grown into a remarkable musical journey rooted in discipline, passion, and purpose. As Patrick continues pursuing excellence both on stage and beyond the classroom, his story stands as a meaningful example of how early encouragement, opportunity, and strong mentorship can shape a student’s future long after they leave ROBS.
