This is not junior high as you remember it. It’s fascinating, fast-paced, and fun! Sixth grade represents a turning point as days become busier and subject matter more sophisticated:
In World History, your child will not only learn about ancient cultures; he will discover how that history connects with current events around the world.
Your child will be spellbound by great stories, from the remarkable novel Wonder to the poignant Where the Red Fern Grows. She will perform a classic folk story and write one of her own.
A year of intensive Earth Science and Oceanography will culminate in the Galveston field trip, where your child will kayak in shallow salt marshes and seine for sea creatures.
English, Science, and Social Studies classes will offer context for developing strong composition skills.
Through our buddy program, your child will shine as a role model to a Kindergartener. Together, they will study, laugh, work, and pray.
An advisory class of ten students will have important discussions about character, friendship, and making choices that help us be who God wants us to be.
Sixth graders also enjoy the freedom of individualized schedules. Some begin formal Spanish; others take a second English class. They can choose from an array of activities during the school day and compete enthusiastically for ROBS after class. Raider Chorus engages budding musicians, and Math Club offers friendly competition to students with a passion for math and science.
Middle School is an ideal time for your child to try on many hats. Both of you may be surprised at what new interests and talents emerge!
When I came to ROBS in sixth grade, I immediately felt like I belonged.
Athletics
Sixth graders compete for the first time as Raiders in cross country and track and field.
Buddies
Sixth graders have the all-important role of mentoring Kindergarteners in our buddy program. As their relationship strengthens throughout the year, even the shyest six-year olds blossom.
Marine Biology Field Trip
No, it’s not just a trip to the beach. The Galveston field trip puts students in touch with the marine animals they’ve been studying in Earth Science.
Japanese Festival
During their study of World History, students experience important aspects of Japanese culture, from origami and calligraphy, to martial arts and a formal tea ceremony.
Math Club
Nine sixth graders who participate in the Math Club qualified for the state math and science championship in San Antonio.
Sand Project
Getting down to the nitty gritty, sixth graders examine sand from all over the world—from Maine to Madagascar–to determine its source.
Storytelling
Our students are maturing as public speakers through performances such as the annual sixth grade storytelling festival. When it comes to memorizing and reciting classic children’s stories, polish and presentation are key.
Bible Class
Not only do students learn a lot about the Old and New Testaments; Bible class is also a forum for honoring God by serving others. Here sixth graders make blankets for patients at Texas Children’s Hospital.
